Health

Salukis live 12 to 14 years. Heart conditions including cardiomyopathy affect the breed, so cardiac screening matters. Their lean build means anesthesia hits them differently, so always tell your vet the breed before any procedure. Cancer, particularly hemangiosarcoma, occurs at higher rates than average. Source from breeders who cardiac test and schedule annual heart checkups.

Grooming

The smooth coat on the body needs only a weekly brush. The feathering on the ears, legs, and tail needs gentle combing two to three times a week to stay tangle free. Bathe every four to six weeks. Being thin coated, your Saluki needs a coat or sweater in cold weather. Trim nails monthly.

Exercise

Your Saluki needs a full run in a securely enclosed area every day. They are one of the fastest dog breeds alive and their prey drive overrides everything else in open spaces. Never let them off leash outside of a fully fenced area. They stay calm and relaxed indoors once they get their daily sprint.

Training

Salukis are intelligent but independent. They were bred to hunt without human direction, so they follow their own judgment rather than commands. Use positive reinforcement with patience. Off leash recall is genuinely unreliable near prey animals or moving objects. Socialize early to prevent shyness. Keep training sessions short and varied.

Nutrition

Salukis look underweight even when healthy, so do not overfeed based on appearance. Feed a protein rich diet twice daily in measured portions. Feel the ribs rather than just looking at your dog to judge body condition. Add omega 3 fatty acids to support coat health. Always provide fresh water.

History

The Saluki is one of the oldest dog breeds known to humans, with depictions appearing in ancient Egyptian tombs over 4,000 years old. Middle Eastern and Central Asian nomads used them to course gazelle, hare, and fox across desert terrain. Islamic tradition generally considered dogs unclean but made an exception for the Saluki, which nomads treated as a treasured gift. Western travelers brought the breed to England in the late 1800s. The Kennel Club recognized the Saluki in 1923.
