Informacion i Detajuar për Racën

Health

Lancashire Heelers typically live 12 to 15 years, an excellent lifespan. Their long back makes them prone to intervertebral disc disease, so jumping should be limited. Patellar luxation and certain eye conditions also occur occasionally. Otherwise, this is a hardy, long-living small breed.

Grooming

The short, dense coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush keeps shedding under control and the coat clean. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims, ear checks, and dental care round out a simple routine for this easy-care breed.

Exercise

Despite their short legs, Lancashire Heelers are surprisingly athletic and need about 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks, herding games, and active play suit them well, though jumping should be limited to protect their back. They have real stamina built for herding work. Mental stimulation matters just as much as physical exercise.

Training

Highly intelligent, Lancashire Heelers generally train very well with positive, consistent methods. Early socialization helps manage their natural herding instinct to nip at heels. They genuinely enjoy learning and excel in obedience and agility. This breed thrives with a clear job and mental challenge.

Nutrition

A small-breed formula with quality protein suits this little dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as extra weight strains their long back significantly. Fresh water should always be available.

History

Developed in Lancashire, England, this breed was bred to herd cattle by nipping at their heels, while also doubling as a skilled ratter on farms. Their low stature kept them safely under kicking range while working livestock. The breed nearly went extinct in the mid-1900s before dedicated breeders revived it. It remains relatively rare today but cherished for its versatile, energetic working nature.
