Field Spaniel

Field Spaniels typically live 10 to 12 years. Ear infections are common given their long, feathered ears, so regular cleaning matters. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions also occur. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, gentle sporting breed.

That silky, feathered coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks helps maintain the coat. Bathe every few weeks. Ears need regular checks and cleaning at every grooming session.

Bred as a versatile hunting companion, Field Spaniels need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, fetch, and scent work suit their sporting heritage well. They genuinely enjoy having a task to focus their energy on. Mental stimulation through games keeps them happily engaged.

Intelligent and eager to please, Field Spaniels generally train well with patient, positive methods. Early socialization rounds out their naturally gentle, affectionate temperament. They are sensitive dogs, so harsh corrections should be avoided. This breed thrives with a calm, consistent handler.

Developed in England in the 1800s from the same root stock as the Cocker and Springer Spaniels, the Field Spaniel was bred as an all-purpose hunting companion. Early breeding trends toward an exaggerated, long body nearly led to the breed's downfall. Dedicated breeders corrected the type in the 1900s, restoring a more functional build. The breed remains rare but cherished by devoted enthusiasts today.
