Health

Dandie Dinmont Terriers typically live 12 to 15 years. Their long back makes them prone to intervertebral disc disease, so jumping should be limited. Hypothyroidism and certain eye conditions also occur in the breed. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy, long-living small terrier.

Grooming

That distinctive soft topknot and wiry body coat need brushing two to three times a week. Hand-stripping a few times a year maintains proper coat texture. Bathe only when needed. The signature topknot needs occasional trimming to stay tidy.

Exercise

This small terrier needs about 30 to 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks and moderate play sessions suit their independent nature well, though jumping should be limited to protect their back. They still enjoy digging and exploring like true terriers. Mental stimulation through games keeps boredom away.

Training

Intelligent but stubborn, Dandie Dinmont Terriers can be a bit of a training challenge. Positive reinforcement and patience pay off well. Early socialization helps round out their naturally independent, confident temperament. Short, fun training sessions work better than long, repetitive ones.

Nutrition

A small-breed formula with quality protein suits this little dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as extra weight strains their long back significantly. Fresh water should always be available.

History

Named after a character in Sir Walter Scott's 1814 novel "Guy Mannering," this breed developed in the Scottish borders to hunt badgers, otters, and vermin. Their distinctive long body and topknot set them apart from other terriers. The breed was one of the first terriers to gain formal recognition in Britain. Today it remains a rare but charming working terrier.
