Munchkin

Munchkins live 12 to 15 years. The Munchkin gene causes short legs through a dominant mutation similar to achondroplasia in dogs. The gene is lethal in a double dose so two short legged Munchkins should never be bred together. Lordosis, an inward spinal curve, and pectus excavatum, an inward chest deformity, occur in some individuals. Annual vet visits monitor for any spinal or chest changes over time.

Munchkins come in shorthaired and longhaired varieties. Shorthaired Munchkins need brushing twice a week. Longhaired varieties need brushing three to four times weekly to prevent mats. Both types stay relatively clean between baths. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Munchkins are surprisingly active and playful despite their short legs. They run, jump, and play with genuine enthusiasm and rarely seem limited by their stature. Provide interactive wand toys, puzzle feeders, and climbing structures with accessible ramps. Two play sessions of ten to fifteen minutes daily keeps most Munchkins content.

Munchkins are intelligent, curious, and sociable. They respond well to treat rewards and learn their name, tricks, and routines quickly. They enjoy interactive games and staying close to their owners. Socialize kittens early. Their outgoing, adaptable temperament makes them easy to introduce to new people and situations.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with measured portions. Munchkins can gain weight which puts additional stress on their already different leg structure. Monitor weight monthly. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Wet food supports hydration. Always provide fresh water.

The Munchkin developed from a naturally occurring short legged mutation in domestic cats. Short legged cats appeared sporadically throughout history in Europe and the United States. The modern breed traces to a short legged female cat named Blackberry found under a truck in Louisiana in 1983. Breeder Sandra Hochenedel began developing the breed and brought it to public attention. TICA recognized the Munchkin as a championship breed in 2003 after years of debate about the ethics of the short leg trait.
