Health

Korats live 15 to 18 years. Two hereditary neurological diseases, Gangliosidosis GM1 and GM2, occur in the breed and cause progressive, fatal neurological deterioration. Responsible breeders must test for these conditions before breeding. Cats that test carrier can be bred safely to clear cats only. Annual vet visits keep most health tested Korats in excellent condition throughout their long life.

Grooming

Your Korat has a short, single layer, silver tipped blue coat that needs brushing once a week to remove loose hair and keep it shiny. Their coat has no undercoat so shedding is minimal. Bathe only occasionally. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly. Grooming is simple with this breed.

Exercise

Korats are moderately active and enjoy interactive play. They like wand toys, puzzle feeders, and games with their owners. They are gentle in play but enthusiastic. Two play sessions daily of ten to fifteen minutes keeps most Korats content. They adapt well to indoor life when given consistent stimulation.

Training

Korats are intelligent and form deep bonds with one or two people. They respond well to treat rewards and learn routines and tricks with patience. They can be reserved with strangers so early socialization matters. They pay close attention to their environment and notice changes immediately. Keep training sessions short and consistent.

Nutrition

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with measured portions. Korats are not prone to obesity but monitor weight monthly. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Wet food supports hydration. Always provide fresh water and avoid foods heavy in grains or artificial additives.

History

The Korat is one of the oldest and most stable natural cat breeds, originating in the Korat province of Thailand where it has lived for centuries. Thai people consider the Korat a symbol of good luck and prosperity and traditionally give them as gifts to bring fortune to newlyweds and dignitaries. The Cat Book Poems, a Thai manuscript dating from 1350 to 1767, depicts the Korat alongside the Siamese and Burmese. The breed arrived in the United States in 1959 and the CFA recognized it in 1967.
