This breed sheds moderately and needs brushing once or twice a week to stay neat. Longhaired individuals need a bit more attention to avoid mats. Bathing is rarely necessary since they groom themselves well. Keep an eye on nails and ears during regular brushing sessions.

Athletic and playful, American Bobtails enjoy interactive toys, climbing, and even leash walks. They retain a wild, hunter-like energy that needs a daily outlet. Puzzle feeders and wand toys work great. A stimulated Bobtail is a calm, content companion indoors.

Highly intelligent and dog-like in attitude, this breed is one of the easiest cats to train. They learn fetch, come-when-called, and simple tricks quickly. Positive reinforcement with treats works beautifully. Early socialization makes them even more adaptable to new people and pets.

A protein-focused diet supports their muscular frame and active lifestyle. Wet food adds valuable hydration alongside quality dry kibble. Watch portions, as this breed can gain weight if under-exercised. Fresh water should always be nearby, especially with drier food.

The American Bobtail traces back to the 1960s, when a short-tailed kitten was found near an Arizona reservation. Breeders worked to establish the trait as a stable, healthy line. Unlike some bobtail breeds, the trait does not affect the spine. Recognized by CFA in 1989, it remains a beloved natural breed.
