Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Transylvanian Hounds live 10 to 14 years and are a generally healthy hunting breed. Hip dysplasia and ear infections are the main concerns given their active build and floppy ears. Being a relatively rare breed, ask breeders directly about health conditions present in their lines. Annual vet visits keep most Transylvanian Hounds healthy throughout their active life.

Grooming

Your Transylvanian Hound has a short, dense black and tan coat that needs only a weekly brush. Their floppy ears need weekly checks and cleaning to prevent moisture buildup and infection. Bathe monthly or when needed. Trim nails every three to four weeks and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Your Transylvanian Hound needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Running, scent work, and field activities match their hunting heritage. They follow their nose intensely so keep them on leash in open areas. Secure fencing is essential. Without enough outlet they become restless and vocal.

Training

Transylvanian Hounds are intelligent and willing but their hunting drive runs deep. Use positive reinforcement and high value food rewards. Start early with leash manners and basic commands. Scent work and tracking activities give this breed a constructive outlet. Recall in open areas around game animals is genuinely limited.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Active hunting dogs need more calories during hunting season. Adjust portions based on workload and monitor body condition monthly. Two meals per day works better than one large feeding.

History

The Transylvanian Hound is an ancient Hungarian breed that hunters used for over a thousand years to pursue game including bear, boar, and lynx in the Carpathian Mountain forests of what is now Romania. Two size varieties existed historically, a taller type for large game and a shorter type for fox and hare. Only the taller variety survives today. The breed nearly went extinct in the 20th century before Hungarian and Romanian breeders revived it. The FCI recognized the breed in 2006.
