Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Belgian Malinois typically live 12 to 14 years and are a fairly healthy, athletic breed. Hip and elbow dysplasia are the main concerns given their active build. Certain eye conditions occur occasionally too. Regular screening keeps this high-drive working breed in top form.

Grooming

The short, dense coat needs a weekly brush to manage shedding. Shedding increases noticeably during seasonal coat blows, requiring more frequent attention then. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Bred for serious working drive, Malinois need intense daily exercise — well over an hour of real activity. Running, structured training, and working games suit their high energy perfectly. Without enough outlet, their drive turns into destructive or anxious behavior fast. This breed genuinely needs a job, not just a walk.

Training

Exceptionally intelligent, Malinois are among the most trainable working breeds in the world. They thrive with structured, consistent training and a clear purpose. Early socialization is essential to manage their intensity and drive. This breed excels in police, military, and protection work for good reason.

Nutrition

A high-energy working dog needs a protein-rich diet to fuel intense activity levels. Two measured meals daily support steady energy throughout demanding days. Working Malinois may need significantly more calories than companion dogs. Fresh water should always be available, especially after training.

History

Originating in Belgium in the late 1800s, the Malinois is one of four Belgian Shepherd varieties, developed for herding sheep across the countryside. Their intelligence and drive soon caught the attention of police and military trainers. Today they are among the most widely used working dogs worldwide, valued in security, detection, and protection roles.
