Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Appenzeller Sennenhunds are a generally healthy breed, often living 12 to 15 years. Hip dysplasia and epilepsy occur occasionally in the breed. Being relatively rare, their gene pool stays fairly diverse and healthy. Routine vet visits keep this sturdy mountain dog thriving.

Grooming

The dense double coat needs brushing once or twice a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases seasonally, requiring more attention during those periods. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims and ear checks complete a simple, manageable routine.

Exercise

Bred for herding and guarding in the Swiss mountains, this breed needs substantial daily exercise — close to an hour or more. Hiking, herding games, and agility suit them well. They have impressive stamina and love having a purpose. Mental engagement is just as important as physical activity.

Training

Smart and eager to work, Appenzellers train well with confident, consistent handling. Early socialization helps manage their natural wariness of strangers. Positive reinforcement builds trust and cooperation. This breed thrives with a job and clear structure.

Nutrition

A medium-to-large breed formula with quality protein suits their active lifestyle well. Two measured meals daily support steady energy throughout busy days. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Joint supplements help support their working frame long term.

History

One of four Swiss mountain dog breeds, the Appenzeller developed in the Appenzell region of Switzerland for herding cattle and guarding farms. Farmers valued their agility, stamina, and loud, distinctive bark. The breed remained largely unknown outside Switzerland for centuries. It's still relatively rare internationally but cherished by those who know it.
