Sphynx Cat

Sphynx cats live 8 to 14 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most serious hereditary concern and breeders must cardiac screen all breeding cats. Hereditary myopathy, a muscle disease causing weakness, also occurs. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in Sphynx can progress faster than in many other breeds so more frequent cardiac checkups matter. Their lack of coat also makes them vulnerable to sunburn and temperature extremes.

Your Sphynx needs more skin care than most coated cats. Bathe weekly to remove body oil buildup that causes skin odor, staining, and acne. Use a gentle cat shampoo and warm water. Clean ears weekly since they accumulate significant wax without surrounding hair. Trim nails every two weeks. Keep them warm indoors since they lose body heat rapidly.

Sphynx cats are energetic, acrobatic, and playful. They perform aerial leaps, wrestle, and chase with total commitment. Provide tall cat trees, wand toys, and interactive puzzle feeders. They also love snuggling in warm spots between play sessions. Two vigorous play sessions daily keeps them physically satisfied. They crave human contact constantly.

Sphynx cats are among the most people oriented and trainable cat breeds. They respond enthusiastically to treat rewards and learn tricks, fetch, leash walking, and their name quickly. They follow their owners everywhere and get into everything. Socialize kittens early. Their extroverted, dog like personality makes training genuinely fun.

Sphynx cats have a faster metabolism than coated breeds and need more calories to maintain body temperature. Feed a quality high protein diet twice daily. Monitor weight monthly since the absence of coat makes body condition easier to assess visually than in most breeds. Choose foods with real meat first. Always provide fresh water.

The Sphynx originated in Toronto, Canada, in 1966 when a hairless kitten named Prune was born to a domestic shorthair cat. Owner Ridyadh Bawa began a breeding program with geneticist Dr. Hugo Hernandez. The hairless gene is recessive and early breeding faced significant challenges maintaining genetic diversity in a small population. Dutch breeders imported Sphynx cats and crossed them with Devon Rex cats to broaden the gene pool. TICA recognized the Sphynx in 1979 and the CFA in 2002.
