Devon Rex

Devon Rex cats live 10 to 15 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the primary hereditary heart concern and breeders should cardiac test. Myopathy, a hereditary muscle weakness, occurs in Devon Rex cats and causes muscle fatigue and sometimes fatal breathing problems. Blood type incompatibility can also cause kitten loss. Request testing documentation from your breeder before purchase.

Your Devon Rex has a short, soft, loosely curled coat that needs very gentle care. Brush once a week with a very soft brush or your hand to remove loose hair. Their coat is fragile so avoid vigorous brushing. Bathe every few weeks since skin oils build up without a full coat. Clean large ears monthly and trim nails every two weeks.

Devon Rex cats are playful, athletic, and energetic. They jump high, run fast, and love interactive games throughout their life. Provide wand toys, climbing structures, and puzzle feeders. They also enjoy riding on your shoulder and being part of everything you do. Two vigorous play sessions daily keeps them satisfied.

Devon Rex cats are mischievous, clever, and highly trainable. They respond enthusiastically to treat rewards and learn tricks, leash walking, and games quickly. They are sometimes called the pixie of the cat world because of their playful antics. Start training young. They thrive on mental engagement and owner interaction.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily to support the Devon Rex fast metabolism. They feel cold easily without a full coat so adequate nutrition helps with temperature regulation. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Always provide fresh water and monitor weight monthly.

The Devon Rex originated in Devonshire, England, in 1960 when a curly coated male cat named Kirlee was born to a stray. Breeder Beryl Cox began a breeding program. Early breeders assumed the Devon mutation was the same as the Cornish Rex but test crosses proved the two mutations are entirely different genes. The Devon Rex and Cornish Rex are genetically distinct breeds that cannot produce curly kittens when crossed together. The CFA recognized the Devon Rex in 1979.
