Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Xoloitzcuintlis live 13 to 18 years, one of the longest lifespans of any breed. Skin care is the primary health consideration for hairless individuals since they need protection from sun and cold. Dental issues occur more often in hairless dogs due to a genetic link between hairlessness and missing or misshapen teeth. Patella luxation also occurs. Source from responsible breeders.

Grooming

Hairless Xolos need moisturizer applied regularly to their bare skin and sunscreen before outdoor time in sun. Bathe weekly to manage skin oils and prevent acne like breakouts. Coated varieties need only a weekly brush. Both types need dental care given tooth issues common in hairless individuals. Trim nails every three weeks.

Exercise

Your Xoloitzcuintli needs 45 to 60 minutes of active exercise daily. Walks and secure yard play suit their moderate energy level. Hairless dogs get cold easily so provide a coat in cold weather and limit outdoor time in extreme cold. Mental stimulation through training rounds out their daily needs.

Training

Xolos are intelligent and alert but can be reserved and independent. Use positive reinforcement consistently. Start socialization extensively from puppyhood since they tend toward wariness with strangers. Early training from a patient, consistent owner produces a stable, trustworthy companion. Keep sessions short and positive.

Nutrition

Feed a quality breed appropriate formula twice daily with measured portions. Monitor body condition monthly. Avoid foods with excessive grains that can worsen skin conditions in sensitive individuals. Fresh water should always be available. Keep treats minimal and choose high quality options.

History

The Xoloitzcuintli, pronounced show low eats QUEENT lee, is one of the oldest and rarest dog breeds in the world, with a history in Mexico and Central America stretching back over 3,000 years. The Aztec people named the breed after their dog headed god Xolotl and believed these dogs guided souls safely through the underworld. Aztecs also used the breed as a healing dog, placing them against arthritic patients for warmth. The breed comes in three sizes and two coat types. Mexico declared the Xolo a national treasure.
