Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

The Stabyhoun lives 13 to 15 years and is a generally healthy breed. Hip dysplasia and epilepsy occur in the breed. Certain heart and connective tissue conditions have been noted in some lines as well. As one of the rarest dog breeds in the world, responsible breeders work carefully to manage genetic diversity. Source from breeders who health test and participate in the breed health registry.

Grooming

Your Stabyhoun has a medium length, flat coat with feathering on the legs and tail. Brush two to three times a week to prevent mats and manage shedding. Ears need weekly checks since their floppy shape traps moisture. Bathe every four to six weeks. Trim nails every three to four weeks and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Your Stabyhoun needs 45 to 60 minutes of active exercise daily. They love to swim, fetch, and work in the field. Walks, agility, and scent games all suit their versatile, willing nature. Without consistent activity, they become bored and restless. This breed thrives with a regular outdoor routine.

Training

Stabyhouns are highly intelligent and eager to please, making them genuinely easy to train with positive reinforcement. They respond exceptionally well to praise and food rewards. Start socialization early since they can be reserved with strangers. They excel in obedience, agility, and field work. Avoid harsh corrections since they are sensitive and shut down quickly under pressure.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Monitor body condition monthly since the Stabyhoun coat can hide gradual weight changes. Two meals per day works better than free feeding. Fresh water should always be available, especially after swimming and field activities.

History

The Stabyhoun developed in Friesland, a northern province of the Netherlands, where farmers used them for centuries to hunt small game and vermin while also serving as loyal farm dogs and family companions. Written records mentioning the Stabyhoun date back to the early 1800s. The breed is considered a national treasure of the Netherlands and exports are carefully controlled to manage the small global population. Today fewer than 7,000 Stabyhouns exist worldwide, making it one of the rarest breeds on earth.
