Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer lives 12 to 14 years and is a generally healthy hunting breed. Hip dysplasia and ear infections are the main concerns. Progressive retinal atrophy has been noted in some lines. Source from health tested breeders, request hip and eye clearances, and schedule annual vet visits. This breed is robust overall when bred responsibly.

Grooming

Your Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer has a dense, wiry coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. Hand strip once or twice a year to maintain proper coat texture. Check ears after every field session or swim since the floppy shape traps moisture. Bathe monthly. Trim nails every three to four weeks.

Exercise

Your Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Field work, running, and scent activities match their drive and endurance perfectly. Without consistent activity, their energy turns into restlessness indoors. This is a versatile hunting dog at heart and needs to be kept active.

Training

This breed is intelligent, loyal, and trainable with consistent positive reinforcement. They are versatile hunting dogs that point, track, and retrieve, so they respond well to purposeful training. Start socialization early. They bond closely to their handler and work best with a calm, consistent owner who gives clear direction.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium to large breed formula twice daily calibrated to your dog activity level. Hunting dogs in the field need significantly more calories than lightly active pets. Adjust portions based on actual workload and body condition. Fresh water is essential after field sessions.

History

The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer developed in Slovakia in the mid 20th century through a deliberate cross between the German Wirehaired Pointer and the Cesky Fousek. Slovak hunters wanted a tough, versatile gun dog suited to the varied terrain of the Carpathian region. The breed was officially recognized in 1975 in Czechoslovakia. The FCI recognized the breed internationally in 1983. Outside Slovakia, the breed remains quite rare and is primarily known among dedicated hunters.
