Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Russell Terriers live 12 to 14 years and are a generally healthy small breed. Patellar luxation and lens luxation occur in the breed. Legg Calve Perthes disease, a hip condition, is also documented. Eye conditions including primary lens luxation can develop, so annual eye exams are worthwhile. Source from breeders who test for these conditions.

Grooming

The smooth, rough, or broken coat all need minimal maintenance. Brush once a week to manage shedding and keep the coat clean. Rough and broken coats benefit from hand stripping once or twice a year. Bathe monthly or when your dog needs it. Clean ears weekly, trim nails every three to four weeks, and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Your Russell Terrier needs 45 to 60 minutes of active exercise daily. Fast walking, fetch, and agility games match their relentless energy. Secure fencing is essential since their prey drive and digging instinct are both strong. Without enough outlet, they become destructive and vocal fast.

Training

Russell Terriers are quick learners but strong willed. Positive reinforcement works well when sessions are short and interesting. Repetitive training bores them immediately. Start socialization from day one and establish clear boundaries early. Their intelligence means they test limits constantly, so consistency from every family member matters.

Nutrition

Feed a quality small breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Russell Terriers can gain weight if overfed and under exercised. Keep treats minimal and use them as training rewards. Two meals per day works better than free feeding. Fresh water should always be available.

History

The Russell Terrier shares its origins with the Parson Russell Terrier, both tracing back to the working fox terriers developed by Reverend John Russell in 19th century England. Over time, breeders outside England developed a shorter legged, more compact type suited to going to ground after fox in narrower dens. The two types were formally separated, with the Russell Terrier recognized by the AKC in 2012 as distinct from the longer legged Parson Russell Terrier.
