Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Miniature American Shepherds typically live 12 to 13 years. Hereditary cataracts and certain eye conditions occur in the breed, particularly the MDR1 drug sensitivity gene mutation common to herding breeds. Hip dysplasia is also a concern. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, energetic small herding breed.

Grooming

That medium-length double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring more frequent attention then. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Bred for herding on a smaller scale, Miniature American Shepherds need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, herding games, and agility suit their athletic, intelligent nature well. They thrive with both physical movement and mental challenges. A bored Mini American Shepherd quickly becomes restless or anxious.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Miniature American Shepherds are among the easiest herding breeds to train. Positive reinforcement produces excellent, fast results. Early socialization rounds out their naturally alert, loyal temperament. This breed genuinely loves having a job and learning new skills.

Nutrition

A small-to-medium breed formula with quality protein suits their active herding lifestyle. Two measured meals daily support steady energy throughout busy days. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Developed in the United States in the 1960s, this breed was bred down from working Australian Shepherds to create a smaller dog suited to ranch work and rodeo performances. Despite the smaller size, breeders preserved the full herding drive and intelligence of its larger cousin. The breed gained AKC recognition in 2015. Today it remains a versatile, energetic companion popular in agility and obedience sports.
