Irish Setters typically live 12 to 15 years. Hip dysplasia and bloat are concerns given their deep-chested, athletic build. Progressive retinal atrophy and hypothyroidism also occur in the breed. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, energetic sporting breed.

That silky, mahogany-red coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks helps maintain the coat's flowing appearance. Bathe every few weeks. Ears need regular checks given their floppy shape.

Bred as a versatile bird-hunting companion, Irish Setters need close to an hour of activity daily. Running, field work, and active play suit their athletic, exuberant nature well.
