Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Catahoula Leopard Dogs typically live 10 to 14 years. Hereditary deafness occurs more often in merle-colored dogs, especially those with significant white coloring. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions also occur. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy, resilient working breed.

Grooming

The short, dense coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush keeps shedding under control and the coat clean. Bathe only when genuinely needed. Nail trims, ear checks, and dental care round out a simple routine for this active breed.

Exercise

Bred for herding wild hogs through swampland, Catahoulas need intense daily exercise — well over an hour of real activity. Running, herding games, and working-style activities suit their high drive perfectly. Without enough outlet, their energy turns into destructive behavior fast. This breed genuinely needs a job to stay balanced.

Training

Highly intelligent but independent, Catahoulas need a confident, experienced handler. Early socialization is essential given their natural protective instincts. Positive reinforcement combined with firm consistency works best. This breed thrives with purposeful work and clear leadership.

Nutrition

An active working dog needs a protein-rich diet to match their high drive. Two measured meals daily support steady energy throughout demanding days. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Developed in Louisiana, this breed descends from dogs brought by Spanish explorers, later crossed with local hunting dogs used by Native American tribes. Bred to herd wild hogs and cattle through dense swampland, their striking leopard-spotted coat became a defining trait. Named Louisiana's official state dog in 1979, the breed remains a tough, capable working dog today.
