This is a rare breed, so responsible breeding with health screening matters more here than in more common lines. Annual vet visits keep things on track.

The short, fine white and orange coat is easy to maintain with a weekly brush. Check ears after field sessions and swims since the floppy shape traps moisture. Bathe monthly or after heavy field work. Trim nails every three to four weeks. Brush teeth regularly. Grooming is minimal with this breed.

Your Braque Saint-Germain needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Field work, long walks, and scent activities match this breed perfectly. They have excellent endurance built for sustained hunting sessions. Without enough physical activity, restlessness sets in quickly.

The Braque Saint-Germain is intelligent, gentle, and trainable with positive reinforcement. They are sensitive dogs and do not respond well to harsh handling. Start socialization and field training early. They develop their natural pointing instincts quickly with calm guidance. Most owners find them easy and rewarding to work with.

The Braque Saint-Germain developed near Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, in the 1830s when the French royal hunt crossed English Pointers with French Braques to create a faster, more refined pointing dog. The resulting breed combined English speed with French hunting style and became popular among French hunters and aristocracy. The breed declined after World War II as hunting changed. French breeders preserved the line and it remains a rare but respected gun dog in France today.
