Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Bluetick Coonhounds typically live 11 to 12 years. Hip dysplasia and ear infections are the main concerns given their long floppy ears. Bloat is a risk in this deep-chested breed, so meal management matters. Otherwise, this is a hardy, resilient hunting breed.

Grooming

The short, dense coat needs just a weekly brush to stay clean and shiny. Those long ears require regular checks and cleaning to prevent moisture buildup. Bathe only when genuinely dirty. Nail trims and dental care round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Bred for trailing raccoons through rugged terrain, this breed needs serious daily exercise — close to an hour or more. Walks, scent games, and securely fenced play suit them well. Their nose can override recall instantly once they catch a trail. Mental stimulation through scent work keeps them genuinely satisfied.

Training

Friendly but nose-driven, Bluetick Coonhounds can be a bit stubborn during training. Positive reinforcement and patience pay off well. Their strong scenting instinct makes off-leash reliability genuinely tricky. Early socialization helps shape a well-rounded family companion.

Nutrition

An active working dog needs a protein-rich diet to match their stamina. Two measured meals daily reduce bloat risk in this deep-chested breed. Avoid heavy exercise right after eating. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Developed in the American South, this breed traces back to French hounds brought over by early settlers, later refined for raccoon hunting. Their distinctive blue-mottled coat and deep bay made them favorites among Southern hunters. The breed gained fame partly through its association with University of Tennessee mascots. AKC recognized them in 2009.
