Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Basenjis typically live 12 to 14 years and are a fairly healthy breed. Fanconi syndrome, a kidney disorder, occurs more often in this breed than most. Progressive retinal atrophy and hip dysplasia are also concerns. Genetic testing for breeding dogs really matters here.

Grooming

This breed has one of the easiest coats around — short, fine, and nearly odorless. A quick weekly brush keeps shedding minimal. They groom themselves almost like cats, so baths are rarely needed. Round out grooming with nail trims and dental care.

Exercise

Famous for not barking, Basenjis are anything but quiet in energy. They need a good 45 to 60 minutes of activity daily, including real running time. Their strong prey drive means off-leash exercise should stay in fenced areas. Mental stimulation matters as much as physical exercise.

Training

Independent and cat-like in attitude, Basenjis are notoriously challenging to train. Positive reinforcement with high-value treats works best. They learn fast but decide for themselves whether to comply. Early socialization helps shape a more cooperative adult dog.

Nutrition

A high-quality protein-rich diet suits this athletic breed well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Given their kidney sensitivity, some owners work with vets on specialized diets. Fresh water should always be available.

History

One of the oldest dog breeds, the Basenji originates from Central Africa, where it was used for hunting small game in dense forest. Known as the "barkless dog," it makes a unique yodel-like sound instead. The breed remained relatively unchanged for thousands of years before reaching the West in the 1930s.
