Anatolian Shepherd Dog

Anatolian Shepherds are a robust breed, often living 11 to 13 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia are concerns given their large size. Bloat is a real risk in this deep-chested breed, so splitting meals helps. Otherwise, this is a hardy, low-maintenance livestock guardian.

The short-to-medium double coat sheds moderately and needs a weekly brush. Shedding increases during seasonal coat blows, requiring more frequent brushing then. Bathe only when needed, as their coat naturally resists dirt. Nail trims and ear checks complete a simple routine.

Bred to guard livestock across vast open land, these dogs need plenty of space and daily activity. A securely fenced yard with room to patrol suits them well. They're not high-energy in the playful sense but need purposeful daily movement. Mental engagement matters as much as physical exercise.

Independent and protective by nature, Anatolian Shepherds need an experienced, confident owner. Early socialization is essential to manage their natural guarding instincts. Positive reinforcement works, but consistency matters even more. This is not typically a breed for first-time dog owners.

This ancient breed originates from the Anatolian plateau of Turkey, where it guarded livestock against wolves and bears for thousands of years.
