Norwegian Forest

Norwegian Forest Cats live 14 to 16 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and glycogen storage disease type IV, a fatal metabolic disease, both occur in the breed. Breeders must test for GSD IV before breeding. Hip dysplasia occurs more often than in most cat breeds. Request testing documentation from your breeder and schedule annual vet visits with cardiac monitoring.

Your Norwegian Forest Cat has a thick, water resistant double coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. Shedding is heavy during spring when they shed their winter coat. The coat is surprisingly tangle resistant but the collar area and behind the ears mat most easily. Bathe every few months. Trim nails every two weeks and clean ears monthly.

Norwegian Forest Cats are athletic, adventurous, and love to climb. They are strong jumpers who enjoy high perches and tall cat trees. Provide climbing opportunities, interactive wand toys, and outdoor enclosures if possible. Two active play sessions daily keeps them physically satisfied. They enjoy outdoor life and fresh air when safely contained.

Norwegian Forest Cats are intelligent and independent. They learn routines and respond to their name but they operate on their own schedule. Use positive reinforcement with treats. Socialize kittens early since they can be cautious with strangers. Their self sufficient nature makes them more adaptable than many breeds to changing household routines.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily that supports their large, muscular frame. Norwegian Forest Cats take up to five years to fully mature so feed a kitten appropriate diet during growth. Monitor weight monthly. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Always provide fresh water.

The Norwegian Forest Cat has lived in Norway for centuries, appearing in Norse mythology as the skogkatt or forest cat. Norse legends describe large cats that accompany the goddess Freya and are so heavy that even the god Thor could not lift them. The breed adapted over centuries to the harsh Scandinavian climate, developing its thick waterproof coat for survival. Norwegian breeders began formal preservation efforts in the 1930s. World War II interrupted the program but the breed survived. TICA recognized the Norwegian Forest Cat in 1984.
