Tibetan Terriers live 12 to 15 years. Progressive retinal atrophy and lens luxation are the most significant hereditary eye conditions in this breed. Hip dysplasia occurs as well. Request eye and hip testing results from your breeder. Annual eye exams are worthwhile throughout your dog life given the breed tendency toward eye conditions.

Your Tibetan Terrier has a long, flowing double coat that needs brushing several times a week to prevent serious mats. Most pet owners keep the coat in a shorter clip that requires less daily maintenance. Professional grooming every eight to twelve weeks helps. Bathe every three to four weeks. Trim hair around the eyes so your dog can see clearly.

Your Tibetan Terrier needs 30 to 45 minutes of active exercise daily. Walks and yard play suit their moderate energy level well. They enjoy learning tricks and agility style games. Mental stimulation matters as much as physical movement for this clever, adaptable breed.

Tibetan Terriers are intelligent and responsive to positive reinforcement. They can be a touch independent but are generally more cooperative than many terrier breeds. Start socialization early since they tend toward wariness with strangers. Keep sessions varied and fun. They learn well when training stays positive and consistent.

Feed a quality small to medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Monitor body condition monthly since their heavy coat hides weight changes easily. Keep treats minimal. Two meals per day works better than free feeding. Fresh water should always be available.

The Tibetan Terrier is not a true terrier but shares the name due to its size. The breed lived in Tibetan monasteries for over 2,000 years, where monks treated them as sacred companions, mascots, and lucky charms. Tibetan people never sold the breed, only gave dogs as gifts to honored guests. A British doctor named Dr. Agnes Greig received a puppy in the 1920s as a thank you gift and brought the breed to England. The AKC recognized the Tibetan Terrier in 1973.
