Health

Rottweilers live 9 to 10 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia are significant and well documented concerns in the breed. Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer, affects Rottweilers at higher rates than most breeds. Aortic stenosis and other heart conditions also occur. Source from breeders who health test breeding dogs for hips, elbows, and heart. Keep your dog lean to protect joints and schedule regular cardiac checkups.

Grooming

The short, dense double coat sheds moderately year round and heavily during seasonal coat blows. Brush once or twice a week during normal periods and daily during shedding seasons. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly. Grooming is straightforward for a dog of this size.

Exercise

Your Rottweiler needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise every day. Running, swimming, carting, and structured training all match this breed well. Without consistent physical and mental activity, they become difficult to manage and may develop destructive behaviors. This is a working breed with serious strength and drive.

Training

Rottweilers are highly intelligent and trainable but need a confident, experienced owner from day one. Start obedience training and socialization in puppyhood without exception. Use positive reinforcement consistently. Their size and natural protective instinct mean that poor training has serious consequences. A well trained Rottweiler is a devoted, stable companion. An untrained one is genuinely dangerous.

Nutrition

Feed a high quality large breed formula twice daily. Puppies need a large breed puppy diet that supports controlled growth and protects developing joints. Add joint and cardiac supplements as your dog ages. Avoid overfeeding since obesity shortens this breed life significantly and worsens joint disease.

History

The Rottweiler developed in the German town of Rottweil, descended from Roman drover dogs that herded cattle for the Roman legions across Europe. Medieval butchers in Rottweil used these dogs to drive cattle to market and pull carts loaded with meat, earning them the nickname Metzgerhund or butcher dog. The breed nearly went extinct when rail transport replaced cattle drives in the 1800s. German police officers revived the breed at the turn of the 20th century. Today the Rottweiler serves worldwide in police, military, and protection work.
