Boston Terriers typically live 11 to 13 years. Being a brachycephalic breed, breathing difficulties in heat are a real concern, so exercise should be limited on warm days. Eye injuries and cataracts occur more often given their prominent eyes. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy small breed.

That short, smooth coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush keeps shedding minimal and the coat shiny. Facial wrinkles need regular wiping to prevent irritation. Bathe only when needed, and keep eyes clean given their prominent shape.

Playful and energetic, Boston Terriers need about 30 to 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks and indoor play sessions suit them well. Their shortened muzzle means heat tolerance is limited, so avoid intense exercise on hot days. Mental stimulation keeps their bright, clownish personality satisfied.

Intelligent and eager to please, Boston Terriers generally train quite easily. Positive reinforcement with treats and praise works wonderfully. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, sociable temperament. They genuinely enjoy learning tricks and interactive games with their owner.

A small-breed formula with quality protein suits this compact dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as small dogs gain weight quickly on excess treats. Fresh water should always be available.

Developed in Boston, Massachusetts in the late 1800s from Bulldog and Terrier crosses, this breed became known as the "American Gentleman" for its tuxedo-like markings. It was the first breed developed in the United States to gain AKC recognition, achieved in 1893. Their friendly, adaptable nature made them an instant favorite. Today they remain one of America's most beloved companion breeds.
