Health

Berger Picards typically live 12 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia is the main orthopedic concern in this medium-large herding breed. Progressive retinal atrophy occurs in some lines. Otherwise this is a healthy, sturdy breed with no widespread major health issues. Get hip evaluations from breeders and schedule annual vet visits.

Grooming

The rough, shaggy coat looks wild but is actually low maintenance. Brush once a week to remove debris and prevent mats. The coat should not be trimmed since it naturally grows to a moderate length and stops. Bathe only when genuinely needed. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Your Berger Picard needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise every day. Walks, hikes, herding games, and agility all match this breed well. Without consistent activity, they become bored and vocal. This is a working breed at heart and needs space and movement to stay balanced.

Training

Berger Picards are intelligent and highly trainable with the right approach. Positive reinforcement works very well. They respond best to a consistent, calm handler who gives clear direction. Socialize early and widely since the breed can be reserved with strangers. They excel in herding, agility, and obedience when properly motivated.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium-breed diet with good protein twice daily. Adjust portions based on your dogs activity level since working or sport dogs need more calories than lightly active pets. Monitor body condition monthly. Add a joint supplement as your dog enters middle age.

History

The Berger Picard is one of Frances oldest herding breeds, with roots in the Picardy region of northern France going back over a thousand years. Some historians believe the breed arrived with Celtic tribes migrating through Europe. The breed came close to extinction after both World Wars devastated the farming communities of northern France. Dedicated French breeders rebuilt the population from a small number of surviving dogs. The breed gained international attention after appearing in the 2005 film Because of Winn-Dixie.
