Belgian Laekenois dogs live 10 to 12 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia occur in the breed, so ask breeders about health screening. Epilepsy and certain eye conditions are also noted. Overall this is a healthy, athletic working dog when sourced carefully. Annual vet visits and a lean body weight protect long-term joint health.

The rough, wiry coat needs brushing two to three times a week. Unlike the other Belgian Shepherds, the Laekenois has a tousled, fawn coat that should not be clipped since it alters the texture permanently. Bathe a few times a year. Clean ears weekly and trim nails every three to four weeks.

Your Belgian Laekenois needs at least 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous exercise every day. Running, agility, herding, and structured training sessions all match this breed well. Without a real physical and mental outlet, they become anxious and destructive. This is a working dog that needs to be treated like one.

The Belgian Laekenois is highly intelligent and quick to learn. They respond well to positive reinforcement from a confident, consistent handler. Socialization from puppyhood is critical to prevent wariness toward strangers. This breed excels in obedience, protection work, and herding. They need a job to stay mentally balanced.

Feed a high-quality protein-rich diet twice daily that matches your dogs size and activity level. Working or sport dogs need more calories than those in a lighter home environment. Add joint supplements as your dog ages. Keep fresh water available at all times.

The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties, named after Laeken, a suburb of Brussels where Belgian Queen Marie Henriette kept a flock of sheep tended by this type of dog. All four Belgian Shepherd varieties share the same working herding and guarding roots, differing only in coat type. The Laekenois has the rough, wiry coat that distinguishes it. Belgian breeders formally separated the varieties in the early 1900s.
