Ragdolls live 12 to 17 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a well documented hereditary concern and DNA testing exists for the primary Ragdoll HCM mutation. Breeders must test for this. Polycystic kidney disease also occurs. Ragdolls have a low pain tolerance sensitivity threshold and may not show signs of illness until they are seriously unwell, so annual vet visits matter more than in many breeds.

Your Ragdoll has a semi long, silky coat with minimal undercoat that resists matting better than most longhaired breeds. Brush two to three times a week to manage shedding. The collar area and behind the legs mat most easily. Bathe every four to six weeks. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Ragdolls are gentle, calm, and moderately playful. They enjoy interactive wand toys and games but also spend significant time relaxing. Provide a sturdy cat tree and daily play sessions. Without enrichment they become sedentary and gain weight. Two play sessions of ten to fifteen minutes daily keeps most Ragdolls healthy.

Ragdolls are one of the easiest cat breeds to live with. They respond readily to treat based positive reinforcement, learn their name, and can be taught tricks and leash walking. They go floppy when held which makes handling for vet visits and grooming easy. Socialize kittens widely. Their trusting, laid back nature makes training simple.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with measured portions. Ragdolls are large cats that take four years to fully mature. Feed a kitten appropriate diet during growth. Monitor weight carefully since their calm temperament makes them prone to obesity. Choose foods with real meat first. Always provide fresh water.

The Ragdoll was developed by Ann Baker, a breeder in Riverside, California, in the 1960s. Baker claimed the breed originated from a white Persian mix named Josephine who had been injured in a car accident, and that subsequent litters displayed unusual docility and tolerance to pain. Geneticists have not confirmed these claims but the Ragdoll temperament and floppy behavior when held became defining traits. Baker initially trademarked the Ragdoll name and controlled breeding strictly. The breed gained CFA recognition in 2000.
