Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Sealyham Terriers live 12 to 14 years. Lens luxation and retinal dysplasia occur in the breed, so annual eye exams are worthwhile. Deafness has been documented, particularly in dogs with significant white markings. Allergies and skin issues also appear occasionally. Source from breeders who test for eye conditions and schedule routine annual checkups.

Grooming

Your Sealyham needs professional grooming every six to eight weeks to maintain the distinctive profile. Hand stripping preserves the correct wiry coat texture for show dogs. Brush two to three times a week between appointments. The beard and eyebrow furnishings need regular cleaning since they trap food and moisture. Check ears weekly and trim nails monthly.

Exercise

Your Sealyham Terrier needs 30 to 45 minutes of exercise daily. Brisk walks and yard play suit their moderate energy level. They are less hyperactive than many terriers but still need consistent movement. Secure fencing matters since they dig and have prey drive. Mental stimulation through games and training keeps them content.

Training

Sealyhams are intelligent and calmer than most terriers, which makes training more manageable. Use positive reinforcement consistently. Start socialization early since they can be reserved with strangers. They respond well to a patient, confident owner. Avoid repetitive sessions since they bore and disengage quickly like most terrier breeds.

Nutrition

Feed a quality small breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Sealyhams can gain weight easily, especially if exercise drops off. Keep treats minimal and avoid overfeeding. Two meals per day works far better than free feeding. Monitor body condition monthly.

History

Captain John Edwardes created the Sealyham Terrier at his Sealyham estate in Pembrokeshire, Wales, during the mid 1800s. He wanted a fearless, compact dog that could hunt otters, foxes, and badgers alongside his pack of hounds. Edwardes crossed several terrier breeds over decades until the Sealyham type became consistent. The Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1911. The Sealyham enjoyed enormous popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, owned by celebrities including Humphrey Bogart and Alfred Hitchcock.
