Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Kishu Ken dogs are a generally healthy, hardy breed, often living 11 to 13 years. Hip dysplasia occurs occasionally given their active, working build. Being a relatively rare breed outside Japan helps keep the gene pool fairly diverse. Routine vet visits keep this resilient breed thriving.

Grooming

The short, dense double coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush keeps shedding under control and the coat clean. Shedding increases during seasonal coat blows. Bathe only when genuinely needed.

Exercise

Bred for hunting wild boar across Japan's mountainous terrain, Kishu Ken dogs need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, scent games, and active play suit their athletic, fearless nature well. They have real stamina and excellent endurance. Mental stimulation through training keeps their sharp mind satisfied.

Training

Intelligent but independent, Kishu Ken dogs need a confident, consistent owner. Early socialization helps round out their naturally loyal, reserved temperament. Positive reinforcement works best with this breed. They form deep bonds with their family but can be wary of strangers.

Nutrition

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits their active lifestyle well. Two measured meals daily work well for this breed. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

One of Japan's six native breeds, the Kishu Ken developed in the mountainous Kishu region, bred by hunters for tracking and confronting wild boar. Originally bred in multiple colors, breeders eventually favored the striking pure-white coat seen most commonly today. Japan designated the breed a natural monument in 1934. It remains relatively rare outside Japan but respected for its courage and hunting ability.
