Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Keeshonds typically live 12 to 15 years and are a generally healthy breed. Hip dysplasia and certain heart conditions occur occasionally. Patellar luxation is also noted in the breed. Otherwise, this is a hardy, long-living companion breed.

Grooming

That thick double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe only when needed, as their coat naturally resists dirt. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Keeshonds have moderate energy and need about 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks and active play suit their alert, friendly nature well. They genuinely enjoy learning tricks and interactive games with their family. Mental stimulation matters just as much as physical movement for this clever breed.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Keeshonds generally train very well. Positive reinforcement produces excellent results. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, people-oriented temperament. This breed genuinely loves being included in family activities and learning new skills.

Nutrition

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits their active lifestyle well. Two measured meals daily work well for this breed. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Originating in the Netherlands, the Keeshond became closely associated with Dutch patriots during the 1700s political conflicts, serving as an unofficial symbol of the common people's political party. Bred as a versatile barge and farm dog, their distinctive "spectacles" markings around the eyes became a defining trait. The breed nearly faded after its political associations became unpopular before being revived in the 1920s. Today it remains a cheerful, devoted family companion.
