Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Chihuahuas often live 14 to 16 years, one of the longest lifespans of any breed. Dental crowding is extremely common given their tiny mouths, so regular brushing matters a lot. Patellar luxation and a soft spot in the skull called molera also occur. Heart issues appear more often in older Chihuahuas too.

Grooming

Whether smooth or long-coated, this breed is easy to groom. A weekly brush keeps shedding minimal for smooth coats, while long coats need a couple of sessions weekly. Bathe every few weeks. Their tiny mouths need extra dental attention to prevent early tooth loss.

Exercise

Don't underestimate this tiny breed's energy — Chihuahuas need about 20 to 30 minutes of activity daily. Short walks and indoor play sessions suit them perfectly. They have a surprisingly bold, confident personality for their size. Mental stimulation through games keeps their sharp mind satisfied.

Training

Intelligent but a bit stubborn, Chihuahuas can develop "small dog syndrome" without consistent boundaries. Positive reinforcement with treats works wonderfully. Housetraining can take extra patience given their tiny bladders. Early socialization helps curb their natural wariness of strangers and other dogs.

Nutrition

A tiny-breed formula with quality protein and small kibble suits this little dog well. Frequent small meals work better than large feedings, especially for puppies prone to low blood sugar. Watch portions extremely closely, as even small amounts of excess weight strain their tiny frame. Fresh water should always be available.

History

Named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, this breed descends from the ancient Techichi dogs kept by the Toltec civilization. Believed to have spiritual significance, they were later refined into the modern Chihuahua. American breeders developed the standard in the early 1900s. Today they remain one of the most popular small breeds worldwide.
