Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

American Foxhounds are a hardy breed, often living 11 to 13 years. Hip dysplasia and ear infections are the main concerns given their floppy ears and active build. Thrombocytopathy, a blood clotting issue, has been noted in some lines. Otherwise, this is a robust, low-maintenance hunting dog.

Grooming

The short, dense coat is easy to care for with a weekly brush. Their long ears need regular checks and cleaning to prevent moisture-related infections. Bathe only when genuinely dirty. Round out grooming with nail trims and consistent dental care.

Exercise

Built for endurance hunting, American Foxhounds need significant daily exercise — well over an hour of real activity. They thrive with running, hiking, and scent-based games. Without enough outlet, they become loud and restless. A secure, fenced area is a must given their strong prey drive.

Training

Friendly but independent, this breed can be challenging to train due to their nose-driven instincts. Positive reinforcement and patience matter most. Recall is difficult once they catch a scent trail. Early socialization helps them become more adaptable family companions.

Nutrition

A high-energy working dog needs a protein-rich diet to match their activity level. Two measured meals daily support steady energy and reduce bloat risk. Watch their weight, since they're prone to gain when less active. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Brought to America in the 1650s by English settlers, this breed was developed for fox hunting across the rolling countryside of Virginia and Maryland. George Washington himself bred and kept American Foxhounds. The breed remains closely tied to traditional American hunt clubs today. AKC recognized them in 1886.
