Wirehaired Vizsla

Wirehaired Vizslas live 12 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia, certain eye conditions, and epilepsy occur in the breed. Sebaceous adenitis and hypothyroidism are also documented. Source from health tested breeders and request hip and eye clearances. Annual vet visits keep most Wirehaired Vizslas healthy throughout their active sporting life.

Your Wirehaired Vizsla has a dense, wiry golden rust coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. Hand strip once or twice a year to maintain the correct texture. Check ears weekly since floppy ears trap moisture easily. Bathe monthly or when needed. Trim nails every three to four weeks.

Your Wirehaired Vizsla needs at least 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Running, swimming, hunting, and agility match their athletic, driven nature. Without enough physical and mental outlet they become anxious and destructive. This breed thrives with an active owner who can match their energy and provide field work.

Wirehaired Vizslas are highly intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please. Positive reinforcement gets excellent results. Harsh corrections undermine trust quickly so keep training gentle and consistent. Start socialization and field training early. They excel in obedience, agility, and hunting work when given proper structure and mental challenge.

Feed a quality medium to large breed formula twice daily calibrated to your dog activity level. Active hunting dogs need significantly more calories than lightly exercised pets. Monitor body condition monthly. Add omega 3 fatty acids to support coat and joint health. Fresh water should always be available.

The Wirehaired Vizsla developed in Hungary in the 1930s when hunters wanted a more rugged version of the smooth coated Vizsla capable of working in cold water and harsh terrain. Breeders crossed the Vizsla with the German Wirehaired Pointer to add the protective wiry coat. The breed remained largely unknown outside Hungary until after World War II. The AKC recognized the Wirehaired Vizsla in 2014. Today it is growing in popularity among hunters who appreciate its versatility and gentle temperament.
