The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier developed in the United States from a mix of small terrier breeds brought by English immigrants in the 1800s, including Smooth Fox Terriers, Manchester Terriers, and Beagles. American farmers valued them for hunting rats and small game on homesteads. The breed is closely related to the Rat Terrier but has shorter legs. It was named in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, who kept similar terriers. The UKC recognized the breed in 1999.
