The Spinone Italiano is one of Italy oldest pointing breeds, with written references to similar dogs dating back to the 15th century. The rough, wiry coat protected the dog in harsh terrain and cold water. The breed survived World War II in small numbers and Italian breeders worked to restore the population afterward. The AKC recognized the Spinone Italiano in 2000.
