Drever

Drevers typically live 12 to 14 years and are a generally healthy breed. Their long back makes them prone to intervertebral disc disease, so jumping should be limited. Hip dysplasia occurs occasionally too. Otherwise, this is a hardy, resilient small hunting breed.

The short, dense coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush keeps shedding under control and the coat clean. Their floppy ears need regular checks. Bathe only when genuinely needed.

Bred for trailing hare and deer at a steady, moderate pace, Drevers need about 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks and scent games suit their methodical hunting style well, though jumping should be limited to protect their back. They have real stamina built for tracking work. Mental stimulation through scent work keeps them genuinely satisfied.

Friendly but nose-driven, Drevers can be a bit single-minded once they catch a scent. Positive reinforcement and patience pay off well. Early socialization helps shape a well-rounded family companion. This breed genuinely enjoys having a scenting task to focus on.

A small-to-medium breed formula with quality protein suits their active lifestyle. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as extra weight strains their long back significantly. Fresh water should always be available.

Developed in Sweden from Dachshund-type hounds crossed with local breeds, the Drever was bred for slow, methodical hunting that hunters on foot could easily follow. Their short legs and steady pace suited Sweden's dense forest terrain perfectly. The breed remains one of Sweden's most popular hunting dogs today, though it's rarer outside Scandinavia.
