Detailed Breed Information

Health

Carolina Dogs are a remarkably hardy, healthy breed, often living 12 to 15 years. As a primitive, naturally evolved breed, they carry very few hereditary health issues. Hip dysplasia and allergies occur occasionally. Otherwise, this breed's wild origins have kept it genuinely robust.

Grooming

The short, dense coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush keeps shedding under control and the coat clean. Bathe only when genuinely needed. Nail trims, ear checks, and dental care round out a simple routine for this self-sufficient breed.

Exercise

Bred by nature rather than humans, Carolina Dogs retain strong wild instincts and need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, running, and scent-based games suit their primitive drive well. They have impressive stamina and a strong prey drive. A securely fenced area is essential given their independent, roaming nature.

Training

Intelligent but independent, Carolina Dogs can be more challenging to train than typical companion breeds. Positive reinforcement and patience work best with this primitive breed. Early socialization is essential given their natural wariness of strangers. They retain a strong instinct to roam, so secure containment matters greatly.

Nutrition

A quality protein-rich diet suits this naturally lean, active breed well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. They tend to stay naturally fit given their high activity needs. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Discovered living wild in the swamps and forests of the American Southeast, the Carolina Dog is believed to descend from ancient dogs that arrived with early humans crossing into North America. Researchers in the 1970s recognized their unique, primitive traits and began studying the breed. Often called the "American Dingo," they remain one of the few naturally evolved breeds in North America today.
