Detailed Breed Information

Health

The Braque Francais Pyrenean is a healthy breed with a lifespan of 12 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia and ear infections are the main concerns given its active build and floppy ears. Otherwise this is a robust, resilient gun dog with few widespread hereditary problems. Routine vet visits and a lean body weight keep most dogs thriving.

Grooming

The short, dense coat needs a weekly brush to stay clean and healthy. Check ears after every field session or swim and clean them to prevent infection. Bathe monthly or after heavy use in the field. Trim nails every three to four weeks. Brush teeth regularly. Overall grooming needs are low.

Exercise

Your Braque Francais Pyrenean needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Field work, hunting, and scent activities match their working nature perfectly. They have excellent endurance built for long hours outdoors. Without enough exercise, their energy turns into restlessness indoors.

Training

This breed is intelligent, gentle, and highly trainable with positive methods. They are softer in temperament than many gun dogs and respond especially well to calm, patient guidance. Start socialization and pointing work early. They pick up field skills naturally. Avoid harsh corrections since they can undermine this breeds trusting, sensitive nature.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium-to-large breed diet with good protein twice daily. Active field dogs need more calories during hunting season than in the off-season. Adjust portions accordingly and monitor body condition monthly. Fresh water is critical after long days in the field.

History

The Braque Francais Pyrenean is the smaller of two Braque Francais varieties, developed in the Pyrenees Mountains along the French-Spanish border. French hunters bred these versatile pointing dogs for centuries to work across varied mountain and lowland terrain. The Pyrenean type is lighter and faster than the larger Gascogne variety. The breed has maintained a strong foothold among French hunters and remains one of Frances most traditional gun dog breeds today.
